Housing Information

GSSP staff are available to advise you about on and off-campus housing options and determine which options best fit your needs.

On-campus Housing

Our students come from all over the world and from diverse backgrounds. Many are leaving home for the first time. That’s why we make sure to offer plenty of options and all the comforts of home.

Residence halls at Virginia Commonwealth University come in all shapes and sizes — traditional, suite or apartment style. All buildings are secure and include:

  • WiFi
  • Laundry facilities
  • Lounges
  • 24-hour security/information desk
  • Air conditioning
  • Furniture
  • Social activities

VCU GSSP undergraduate and graduate students are not required to live on campus but it is recommended. Living on the VCU campus gives you more chances to get involved, connect with the university community and find your place at VCU. Residence halls provide new students with frequent social activities, not to mention easy access to a support network. Resident assistants, graduate resident directors and professional staff can help with your social and educational transition to college.

Off-campus Housing

VCU students can stay with family nearby or find an apartment or room to rent. Costs range from as little as $500/month for a room in a shared housing option to $1,000-2,000/month for your own apartment.

It is advised that you make off-campus housing arrangements before you arrive in the United States. If you do not arrange housing prior to your arrival, it is important that you arrive on campus early to allow several days to find housing before orientation. You should also budget funds to cover at least two weeks of temporary housing in Richmond and cover the substantial deposits and rental fees required upon signing a lease.

Host Families

In the host family program, an international student/scholar lives with a host family for 8-16 weeks. Expenses for room and board will be paid by the student and they will provide their own transportation. To learn more, please email admissions@vcugssp.com

Temporary Housing

To accommodate students who are not able to move into the dorms or apartments during orientation, there are several hotels within walking distance to the VCU Monroe Park Campus:
